WoW paladin by haikai13 WoW paladin by haikai13
WoW paladin fan art. I did both the design and the model. This has a rather unconventional texture layout to simulate how the character's gear might be split up. Presuming the textures would be combined into a 1k map, the remaining 512 area could be used for other items such as a cape, helmet, etc.

If the models had been like this back then... maybe I would have tried WoW. Seriously.

It looks awesome, friend; he really looks like a lion with that beard (it reminded me of Obi Wan Kenobi). Is there any chance you could do a female version of this? I would like to see your take on it.

A female version would certainly be fun to make! It wouldn't be difficult, but it's unlikely I would revisit this kind of thing unless there was a specific reason for it.  But who knows what the future might bring?! ;)

I really like this, I am a little disappointed that Blizzard does not keep a 'holy' armor theme going with paladin's armor tiers :[

I't does look like something the artis over a blizzard would design, or would have designed, their designs as of late are cluttered and messy. This looks much cleaner then their efforts of late.

Thanks. I also think the WoW designs lately have been too busy. It's a trap that's easy to fall into when trying to design increasingly detailed and "high level" gear that is supposed to be fancier than the designs that came before it.

That's one thing I always noticed with WoW, that the armor is SO detailed and ornate. Heroes in many other stories often get by with a simple tunic and sword, but in WoW you get a sword that's made up of three floating segments all covered in runes and shoulder pads with a rack for each of your weapons, all encrusted with gems and whatnot. It all got a little too complicated in parts - I did really like Shaman Tier 10, though.

I haven't played since a while before MoP came out, but if I did still, I wish the models could look this nice. Well done!

Thanks, I agree. I can understand that the art direction for armor in MMO games is often over the top, but I think there are a lot of players who would rather look good instead of gaudy.

Less is more. Have to much stuff and a room just turns into a storage closet. Some clean lines and your gold.

to be completely honest, i played wow for a number of years as a paladin and there were very few armors that people ever liked to even look at let alone wear. i think, if anything this does a much better job of giving the sense of what a paladin is and and stands for. i could see alot of people wanting this armor just for that back piece.

Thanks! I'm glad the design was successful in that respect. Having worked in MMOs for several years I know that the armor design process is often needlessly complicated and the goal of creating an outfit that players find appealing can get lost in the shuffle sometimes.

My suspicion is that they might remake the base race models, but the armor system itself may not be changed much. It would be a monumental effort to recreate all the gear in the game!

Very interesting. There is some rather heavy Greek influence on the pieces though in lore I suppose it would be considered from the Titans. The large white bauble making up the center points on shoulder pads, weapon and back is curious as the one on the chest piece is not lent the same coloration as the others giving it a peculiar distinction yet also a relation to the knee pads. Then again the item on the back may be a shield...

The layered manner to which the armour flows together is an interesting one. The entire piece seems to build onto itself which works rather well I think. On a related note I find it very interesting how you have filled in the non covered areas with primarily the scaled pattern armour but added in blue cloth, which adds a nice splash of colour to break up what may have become a somewhat monotonous piece.

Interesting work. I really like it and it does appear to be something I would see in WoW as a paladin tier set most likely.

Thanks, it's greatto hear this kind of analysis. Admittedly I wasn't thinking too much about the lore when I designed this. I was just thinking of what "holy" is and some things that came to mind were light/sun/gold/wings. The orb decoration on his chest was originally white as well, but I thought it was starting to become overkill. I really liked the idea of literally striking with the light on the hammer.

The piece on his back is indeed the shield stowed. I always liked the WoW armor sets where stowed shields looked like part of the design because it adds shape to the torso that is otherwise impossible within their armor system.
